A Musical Biography of Nilratan Kanjilal

A pretty village in the district of Faridpur in the undivided Bengal (Now in Bangladesh), NILRATAN KANJILAL was born there on 1st March 1944. He is the eldest son of Late Satish Chandra and Kaushalya who both were in born folk singer. They both used to sing village songs in almost all of their daily sphere of working life. Thus Sri Kanjilal got an inherited sense of music. His grand mother could present mythological stories in an impressive manner through instantly creation lyrics. The grand mother thus made an influence directly to her grand son since childhood towards music.

The village Majhigatee has a big rectangular pond at its south end. In the south east corner of the pond one can find there still a pair of banyan and Pipul tree. The planter of the said pair of trees was Satish Chandra himself who in his childhood did such a work without having any knowledge that at a time it would be so charming for playing typical type of Bamboo flute being seated under the shadow of Banyan and Pipul tree for young Satish Chandra who became a very good Flute player too. Thus Nilratan Kanjilal got musical heredity of Folk music since his childhood. So Sri Kanjilal had a special affinity towards music when he was merely a child.

At a time, Nilratan became very much attracted to folk music and became a disciple of famous Bengali Folk Singer Late Nirmalendu Chaudhury In the year 1981 he was approved as an artist of folk song by Akashvani, Kolkata (All India Radio, Kolkata) and subsequently he became a folk artist of Doordarshan Kendra, Kolkata (T.V.). At present he is a regular artist of All India Radio, Siliguri and Doordarshan Kendra (TV), Jalpaiguri. His specialty is that he can write, compose and sing. He is an approved lyricist of All India Radio, Siliguri.    Sri Kanjilal visited UK in the year 2007 on invitation to participate in public function at Birmingham, Manchester, London, Liverpool etc. and also in TV Channel of London to perform Bengali Folk Songs which had been highly appreciated by local listeners and viewers. Not only in abroad but also in his own city, state, inter state, inter cities and even in the villages, Sri Kanjilal performed his Folk items with dignity and glamour. He has collected huge number of traditional folk songs from different parts of Bengal. All those are different types which Sri Kanjilal can sing maintaining its originality.

Sri Kanjilal is experiencing a trend now a day. The trend is that changes being made in the traditional composition. Normally the traditional composition bear similarities in all ‘ANTARAs’ equally. These are being now altered in some cases to bring variation. Such a variated ‘BHAOYAIYA’ song (Traditional) Sri Kanjilal has sung is “ANGINA SHAMTONG MUI” in his CD, titled  “MAHUA SUNDARI NACHE”.
